Chapter 15
Desiree
âOkay, can anyone tell me what year President Lyndon B Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act?â I questioned the class trying to stay focused and distracted by my kids to keep from dealing with Gabrielâs drama.
â1965.â
âThatâs correct, Kelly.â
âMiss. Spence are you and Coach getting married?â
Shocked at the question, I was speechless for a moment. I was about to answer when the bell rang for lunch period. Saved by the bell. âTime for lunch.â
The kids stood and piled out heading toward the lunch room. I placed my paperwork down on the desk and grabbed my lunch and purse to meet Sidney in the breakroom.
The usual teachers hung out in the teachers' lounge, and I noticed Sidney talking with Mrs. Mary. I walked over right at the tail end of their conversation as they burst out laughing.
âWhatâs so funny?â I asked taking my salad out of the container before checking my messages.
âMrs. Mary was telling me about how she used to date back in her day,â Sidney spoke up and took a sip of her water.
âNothing seems to have changed from what I see. Men still canât get it together,â Mrs. Mary remarked shaking her head in sympathy.
Sidney and I both acknowledged with a high five and Mrs. Mary continued talking about her marriage as Gabriel and Louis walked over and sat next to us.
âWhatâs up, Sidney? You look nice today,â Louis purred and winked at her. She rolled her eyes and smacked him in the back of his head.
âLouis, I told you about trying me. Keep it up, and my foot will be so far up your ass, you wonât be able to walk for a week,â Sidney spat and flipped her middle finger at him.
âYou both realize youâre at work, right?â I informed them before taking a bite of my salad.
âDesiree, tell your friend she needs to get with the winning team. Tell her, Gabriel; I could change her whole world,â Louis explained.
âYeah, Iâll pass; I wouldnât want to be in line at the free clinic for chlamydia,â Sidney joked, and we all burst into laughter even Mrs. Mary, and a frown crossed Louis's face.
âWhatever; Desi, you got any sexy friends like you?â Louis asked.
âWhat did I tell you about calling Desi sexy?â Gabriel chimed in and glared at Louis.
âYou know Louis has very little sense. Louis none of my friends would ever date you, so I suggest you deal with your situation with your kids before trying to date another woman,â I replied trying to act polite to Gabriel as I passed some of my salad to Sidney.
âHow many baby momma's do you have Louis? Which one did you file a restraining order against?â Sidney questioned.
âShit all three,â Louis said, and everyone at the table laughed at his response. Lunch period went on with us joking at Louis's expense.
